Man gets 5 years jail for assaulting Malawi cop during demonstrations

A magistrate court in Lilongwe has sentenced up to five years imprisonment with hard labour a 37-year-old man for wounding a police officer during the anti-Jane Ansah protests.

Senior police officer injured during the HRDC  protests in Lilongwe

The Nkukula resdent magistrate Cecelia Onsewa heard from prosecutors that Patricio Filimon swayed from the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) sanctioned protests to attack the police officer, Wetson Mumba.

Denis Katuya, the police prosecutor said Mumba was severely injured and was admitted to a hospital for his pain and wounds.

Katuya says Mumba still goes to hospital for medical check-ups.

The police charged Filimon with act intended to cause grievous harm.

In her judgment, Onsewa said Mumba did not only suffer from injuries and pains but humiliation as well and therefore slapped the convict with the five-year jail term.

Filimon is a second hand shoe vendor at Tsoka market in Lilongwe but hails from Chapita village in Balaka.

That is a good lesson to the hooligans. Now HRDC please go and cheer this prisoner in jail. My take is that he will suffer alone in jail for the next three year till 2024 when another election will be held . His shoes selling business is stopped and his family will be packing back to Balaka where they hail from. Please Mtambo and Trapence take care of the family. His arrest, conviction and incaceration in jail is because of your violent demos . Filimoni enjoy nyemba in cell given once a day. enjoy the hardwork in Maula and join… Read more »

Not sure if he will come back, such actions anger men in police uniform and it’s hard to come back alive. He went astray to commit felony instead of demonstrations.

That is stupid, when the high profile people commits high crime you implement your legal law sections to defend the culprit but when an indgenous citizen commit a simple crime you convict them in to a longer sentence, this is not fair malawians, lets everytbody be juged with the equal balance regardless of their status.

The problem of showing off, He wanted to be dolo on things that could not benefit him and his family.
5 Years in prison with hard Labour, as a vendor his family will suffer his children will not be able to go to School and all those who depend on him are now in problems. I Hope HRDC of Mtambo and Trapence
will help his family up to 2024.
