Man kills wife for delaying to prepare bed

A 27-year-old Blantyre man is languishing at Chichiri Prison after he ‘unintentionally’ killed his wife of two years last week, police has confirmed.

Records at Blantyre Police show that Henderson Limited of Malekwete village, TA Chikumbu in Mulanje district killed his wife, Mercy Amosi, 23, after he beat her with a rod for delaying to prepare a bed.

Blantyre Police Deputy Spokesperson Lameck Thembachako confirmed the arrest of the man who was working as a guard and was also involved in selling sand.

The suspect and deceased used to stay at Chimwankhunda Dam, top residential area (at the foot of Soche hill), with their two kids.

The suspect was arrested by officers from Soche Police where an officer indicated that during a pre-caution statement, the accused admitted beating his wife before she was taken to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

On Monday, Nyasa Times visited their home and in an interview, their neighbours expressed complete shock with the sudden death of woman.

“We have known the family as a loving unit. They used to do their casual work together,” said one lady who identified herself as Make Rita.

“Actually few hours before the incident, we saw them happily working together at the foot of the hill.”

The man used to guard the house they were staying in, and apart from this full time job, he also used to do various piece works (ganyu) and selling sand.

“Earlier in the day the two were removing sand from the drainages near their residence together and I could not believe when I got the message that our friend has been killed by the husband,” she said.

Another neighbour said it is believed that after they sold some sand the man took some money and went for drinking.

“After he came back [from booze] it is reported that he told his wife to prepare their bed because he was very tired and wanted to retire. But the wife told him to wait a bit so that she could finish bathing their little kid, but the man did not take that.

“He then took a piece of firewood and whipped her on the back of the head while joking that iwe umanyada bwanji, not knowing that that action would send his wife to the grave,” explained the lady who refused to be named.

She added: “She then fell down and fainted, that’s when their three-year-old boy rushed to alert their neighbor. And when the neighbour saw that the mother was lifeless they organized transport to hospital where she was pronounced dead.”
