Man pleads guilty for attacking Malawi President’s portrait: “I am suffering’

A 37-year-old Aaron Mbengo from Samilani Village in Traditional Authority’s Chilipa area in Balaka pleaded guilty  to attacking a portrait of   President Peter Mutharika at Limbe Police Station, saying he felt the President is doing nothing to instill positive change in the country.

Limbe Police spokesperson Pedzisai Zembeneko said Mbengo, on January 13 around 1pm went to Limbe Police Station where he pulled down the president’s portrait and headed out with it.

When he got outside, Mbengo started destroying the portrait.

Police arrested him and paraded him before the Midima Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, and pressed the charge of malicious damage which is contrary to Section 344 of the Penal Code.

Mbengo did not waste the court’s time as he straight away pleaded guilty to  “willfully and unlawfully destroying the portrait of the President, a property of Malawi Government, on January 13 this year.”

He told the court: “I have been suffering since Joyce Banda’s administration and I was expecting that the next president who would change the situation but I have been reading on the internet that things are just getting worse. I am still suffering.”

Magistrate Watson Mankhanamba  ordered that the accused be examined by a mental hospital to assess his sanity before the case continues.

  1. I think any super sane person would do exactly what he has done. He will not continue to suffer inside after his pent up feelings are released. There is nothing insane in what he did except being very true to his feelings and doing the rightful thing. We should as a nation support him by demanding that all portraits of the president be removed in order to remove all the pain this picture brings to many Malawians.
    He has failed to take simple steps to gain donor confidence. It was a simple task for any president who was not involved in cashgate to clear this mess, it was simply setting aside judges and court to prosecute all cases and withing a month all this would have been sorted out. Reclaim the money and things would have been ok.

I think will learn a lot other than depending on donor money and expecting what the government will do for you. instead we should think of what we can do for country as individuals not pointing figures.

He does not even know that every case has elements and he was responding to police questions without reading elements of a crime on the wall. That is why even the Court magistrate couldn’t believe in Malawi in this era we could have a fool like Aaron. Definately, this fool has not walked in the corridor of even primary school,let alone secondary education and tertiary education. And I could not believe that some Malawians can support such a fool, such a stupid person, such a mud man, such useless homo. He is a useless mercenary of JB and these peoples will fail. I mean how can Malawians support a criminal that is described as madman. What will say if doctors at Zomba Hospital prove beyond reasonable doubt that Aaron’s brain stopped working normal long time ago? You have discovered that Malawi is not facing fuel problems and export cover problems, now you are just sensitive by anything even what mentally challenged of Malawi are saying. Aaaron is mentally handicapped. If you are supporting a mentally deformed being it means you too your up stair there it is deformed.Idiots.,

  6. Magistrate Watson is a remarkable man, if it were these magistrates who went to school through back door, this man should have been in jail. To give a chance to take this man for mental check up is admirable, sensible and we need more of such magistrates. Watson if there is a chance for you to attend a degree at Chanco please take it.

He sees , hears and responds to peoples requests/prayers there and then to emergencies and he delays a bit to requests that are not urgent. I’m one of his witnesses. Most of my prayers through the Lord Jesus Christ have been positively answered. If it is not the Living God who grants me what I ask for, then who grants me my almost every request I make? Love God Almighty unreservedly and you’ll find him to be wholly true.

  40. No reason to send Mbengo to mental examination. Mbengo said he is suffering because of poor DPP leadership and he pleaded guilty. He should be sentence to corporal punishment, let say 5 slaps on his buttocks or 1 week community duty. Simple.

  77. The magistrate’s decision is good idea and if proven of sound mind, he must be taught a lesson to deter the would be offenders.
    In any case , what has he done himself to change the things he wants to change.
    It should begin with you/us. The President is just an individual and can not afford doing everything on his own for us.
