Man scalds ex-wife with hot water: Malawi gender-based violence

At a time when Malawi and the international community are  commemorating  16 days of activism towards gender based violence, a  woman is battling for her life at Nkhata-Bay district hospital after her ex husband scalded her with a pail full of hot water due to jealousy.

According to Nkhata-Bay Police head of criminal investigation, Morton Chitsulo, the victim, Tryness Mangwe was staying with the   accused only identified as Shaibu before they had divorced.

A family member to the victim confided in Malawi News Agency that the couple started to quarrel four months ago when the husband decided to marry a second wife.

‘’Due to serious misunderstandings in the family, the two decided to be on separation as the husband fully joined his newly wedded  wife leaving her first wife aside.

In the recent past, the ex-husband used to visit the victim’s residence trying to negotiate a reunion between the two which she refused’’, said the relative.

The relative further said throughout the time the man wanted a reunion and the wife was refusing, the discussions always ended in a fight.

‘‘Over the weekend, Shaibu visited the victim’s house but he found nobody there.

After sometime, the victim returned home and that’s when Shaibu accused her of coming from other men while the marriage with him had not been officially terminated.

As the row between the two reached a climax, the suspect got a pail full of hot water and poured it over the lady’s body resulting in unconsciousness of the woman,’ explained the source.

The woman was then rushed to the district’s hospital where according to sources there, she is in a critical condition.

Meanwhile Police have instituted investigations to arrest the suspect who is at large and his other particulars remain unknown.-Mana
