Marauding buffalo creates panic in Mzimba

A buffalo has been reported on the loose in Mzimba district terrorising communities and trampling farm produce around Inkosi  Mabulabo’s area.

Fear has gripped locals around the area who are reportedly living in a state of siege as the marauding wild animal appears and goes.

But police have called for calm among the villagers saying they are liaising with the district wildlife office to visit the area and ascertain where it may have come from.

“We have heard the reports but we are yet to go there. We have liaised with our friends from the wildlife office and will be going there anytime to assess the situation,” a police officer at Mzimba Police Station said Thursday.

Wild buffalo roam

The villagers believe the rampaging buffalo is hiding in a village forest reserve as it appears and then disappears.

Since it was first spotted along a graveyard, no attack has been reported on human beings despite charging at a number of them.

At one point the stray animal nearly attacked two old women family members who were working in their vegetable garden but they swiftly managed to escape.

Unless otherwise, the Malawi government does not kill wild animals to avoid creating disequilibrium in the country’s ecosystem as it tries to revive the wildlife population with the hopes of boosting tourism.
