Malawi’s most celebrated and award winning netball player Mary Waya  aid out her legacy  by announcing that she will from this weekend start sharing her skills and talent that made her a household name through her Mary Waya Netball Academy.

In an exclusive interview with Nyasa Times, the veteran MTL Queens goal shooter  and Malawi Under 20 netball coach, says time has come for her to start developing talent that will continue put  Malawi on the map.

Waya: Netball academy

“I decided to establish the academy so that I help in the identification and nurturing of raw talent so that we have a strong base for future stars for our teams and of course the netball Queens” she said.

‘Atcheya’  as Waya is affectionately called in netball circles, said she will soon launch the academy but will start off this weekend by training interested girls from the ages of 7 to 15 at the Blantyre Sports club.

Waya: Offers personal legacy to game

“I am focusing on grassroots development because that will be the nursery for Malawi netball,” said ‘Atcheya’ Waya.

“I will be teaching them among other things; general netball skills and improve their hand, foot and eye level coordination” she added.

Waya is the only netball player who has received the greatest award one would hope for in the country during independence celebrations last year called “Malawi senior achiever” for her exploits in netball.

She has also won several awards locally and internationally and has travelled to over 30 countries, pulling crowds with her netball skills.

She led the Malawi under 20 netball team to win gold at the Zone X1 youth games in December last year.
