Maulidi new SG for Malawi ruling PP: Replaces Chibwana
Malawi’s ruling People’s Party (PP) of President Joyce Banda has appointed lawyer Paul Maulidi as its care-taker Secretary-General, replacing Henry Chibwana who resigned on Sunday, Nyasa Times understands.
Chibwana, the former principal at The Polytechnic, a constituent of the University of Malawi, was deputised by Frank Mwenefumbo, George Zulu and Ireen Chikuni.
But the party have not picked any of the deputies who were elected at a convention to entrust the position to founding member Maulidi who lost to Chibwana on the position of secretary general.
PP spokesman Hophmally Makande confirmed the party has picked a “stand-in secretary-general”.
Chibwana resigned from the position on grounds that he brought the party into disrepute for suggesting that Malawi is better off going back to a one-party State.
He courted controversy last week when he said it would not be a problem for the country to go back to one-party State as long as President Banda delivers on development.
Various political parties and analysts condemned the statement and Chibwana said he could no longer fulfil his duties in the wake of the controversial remarks.
