MBC run by Mungomo ‘familly affair’, staffers irked

The propensity by former State House press officer Albert Mungomo and his wife Gloria Banda to turn public broadcaster Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) into a ‘bedroom’ affair has irked fellow staffers who claim the behaviour is making them work in fear.

Mungomo who is MBC’s Director of Programmes is said to have been making unilateral decisions without consulting fellow managers.

According to Nyasa Times sources at the corporation’s Chichiri Studios, Mungomo and Banda – overseer of all announcers at MBC – are said to be moving members of staff at will in ‘bedroom’ orchestrated decisions.

A staffer cited the decision to move Patricia Sundu (Head of Outside Broadcasting) to elsewhere so that the position is given to Banda who already doubles as Deputy Head of Presentation.

“They are running MBC as a personal estate. How can one have two positions at the same time and be wanting to add another?” wondered a staffer who refused to be named.

Added our source: “They have created an environment of fear, and we want government to intervene.”

Apparently, Nyasa Times learnt, much as journalist Before Gumbi was appointed Head of Presentation, the couple is making him a control freak.

The two also allegedly ordered for the closure of MBC Radio 2 at some point without consulting the Radio’s personnel such as Frank Kandu, James Gumbwa, Raymond Sekeni, Stuart Matululu, Joy Nathu, Ephraim Nyirenda, Madalitso Kalamula, Julliet Royo and others.

And yet all this is happening under the watch of Aubrey Sambuleta – acting director – who can’t do anything, complained our source.

When contacted Mungomo asked Nyasa Times to write a questionnaire to which he replied: “I have forwarded your questions to MBC PRO Ruth Gama and she will come [back] to you but below is her phone number.”

Gama said she was travelling from Mzuzu to Blantyre and said she would only attend to the questionnaire once she settled. She did not and days have gone by without her word.

Mungomo, who is said to be in good terms with President Peter Mutharika, is reportedly poised to make life unbearable for anyone standing his way.

He openly declares himself political zealot for ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and that he is untouchable.

  63. This story has been propagated by an MBC disgruntled staffer. It does not make sense at all. You say Mungomo is Director of Programmes right? And the wife is a what? Then how are they involved in staffing issues? How do such positions mandate them to move about staff? And then you talk of Before Gumbi, how is he connected to the story? The paragraph that has Before Gumbi in it does not make sense. In other words, you need to paraphrase it Mr Chauwa. Are you just a trainee journalist or what?

    Finally, we have had enough of your MBC this, MBC that, ok. We do not listen to them anymore like in Kamuzu Days. We have so much choice nowadays, so we don’t care, We also have a wide choice of TV stations to watch, much much better than MBC. On top of that, we have GoTV where we can watch international news and entertainment.
    MBC is always pro-ruling party of the day, so we dont give a damn ……..
