MCCI tells Egenco to plan for disasters to avert prolonged power blackouts

The Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI) has told officials from Electricity Generation Company (EGENCO) to plan for disasters to avert prolonged power blackouts.

MCCCI President James Chimwaza
Officials from MCCI say Egenco should always systematically plan so that power generation is not affected by disasters.
This comes as the state run power generation company is asking for a K20 billion to maintain damaged machines due to the tropical storm triggered floods at Kapichira Hydro Power Station.
The government is asking for money from the government and World Bank to fix the problem.
But MCCI says Egenco needs to have contingency plans in case of disasters besides pleading for support from partners.
MCCCI President James Chimwaza said the ongoing power blackouts is hitting hard the country’s economic activities.
EGENCO has had discussions with government and the World Bank for help to bring back into operation the power station which was damaged by Tropical Storm Ana, depriving the country of about 130 megawatts in the process.
The country is currently facing prolonged power blackouts.
