MCP for better tobbaco prices – Chakwera

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Dr Lazarus Chakwela has said Malawi will still need tobacco as a main cash crop although some people are saying the country should find a replacement.
Speaking during a campaign rally he conducted at Kalambo group in Lilongwe on Sunday, Chakwela said once voted into power, MCP will make sure that every farmer is benefiting from the proceeds from the country’s gold leaf.
“It is a shame that the prices that farmers are getting now are just like punishments for the tough job they do to grow tobacco. People deserve a better reward and MCP will do that, farmers need to enjoy from their sweat,” he said.
Chakwela added that as one way of ensuring that farmers grow quality tobacco, the party will make sure that fertilizer prices should be cheap and available to all.
The party is expected to launch its manifesto on Sunday at Masintha ground in Lilongwe.
