A late strike by super substitute Damiano Chigoneka was all Bonkiri Bonkiri Socials from Lilongwe’s Falls Estate needed to overcome resilient MPICO Socials 1-0 in the final match of the Lilongwe Golf Club Social Soccer Bonanza played on Sunday, March 30, 2014 at the spacious LGC Ground.

Chigoneka, who was spotted warming up with a bottle of Carlsberg Chill beer came on as a substitute striker for Bonkiri in the dying moments and scored the winner in a tightly contested final could have gone either way.

Boasting of former Super League players- Shadreck Chikhosi, Kipax Likwinji and Kingsley Chowawa, Bonkiri came onto the pitch as clear favourites but had the going tough against an equally well oiled MPICO, which also had former Escom United striker Jack Msosa.

MPICO manager Jeffrey Sapa gracefully accepted the defeat and congratulated Bonkiri for their victory:

“It was a closely contested match and our opponents were lucky to score a late goal. We congratulate them and hope next time we will do better,” said Sapa, whose team got K60,000 for finishing second.

His counterpart Dominic Mphatso Majamanda hailed MPICO for offering them good opposition: “It was a well balanced final and the most important thing is not the final outcome but the interaction we had. We thank Lilongwe Golf Club for organising the tournament and hope they will be doing this on a regular basis.”

Majamanda said his side would use the K80,000 prize money for a party at their home base- Green Shelter Pub in Fall.

“We will buy a goat and beer to celebrate with our players and supporters,” he said.

To reach the final, Bonkiri defeated Lee Photo Studio 4-2 with MPICO beating Bunda Alumni by the same margin.

In the third place play-off, Bunda thrashed Lee Photo to claim the K40,000 third prize.
