Opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) officials in Nkhotakota has suspended a councillor for engaging in parliamentary seat campaign when campaign window is not yet open.
Nkhotakota district chairman Frederick Kachimbwe confirmed the party district committee has suspended Samson Kadziputa of Ntosa ward in Nkhotakota South constituency.
“This is against our rules, this is against the four corner stones because we have a sitting MCP parliamentarian in the area. We would bring confusion and anarchy if we allowed this,” he said.
The district chairman therefore said the councillor is working as an independent councillor, saying he no longer represents the MCP.
Kadziputa however was unfazed with the suspension, saying he has done nothing wrong.
“I have already appealed to the regional committee, therefore the suspension falls off,” he said.
He challenged that he would continue with his campaign for a parliamentary seat ahead of the 2019 elections, arguing he is not breaking any law.
Member of parliament for the area is Evance Makowa Mwale.
In Maria ward, in Lilongwe, its councillor Adam Lupanga is under fire from his people for allegedly favourtism in the award of Local Development Fund projects within his area.
Lupanga has denied the allegations.
