MCP’s Bikoko elected Mayor of Lilongwe: DPP’s Mphepo whinges as Kwame Bandawe loses mayoral status

Malawi Congress Party (MCP)’ councillor for  Chigoneka ward Desmond Bikoko has been elected Mayor of Lilongwe , the capital of Malawi to replace  Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) councilor for Kawale 1 Ward Willie Chipondera.

In a bitterly fought race,  Bikoko defeated  ruling DPP candidate Akwame Bandawe formerly deputy mayor) in full presence of the highly powered delegation of the party led by its party secretary general Francis Mphepo and presidential advisor Hetherwick Ntaba.

Bikoko won with 15 votes against 14.

And DPP’s Mphepo was heard whingeing after the results as he accused Chilinde councillor Kadomtoli for “deliberately” casting a null and void vote despite pocketing money to vote DPP’s candidate  so that MCP candidate win.

DPP splashed cash in vote buying and Mphepo had to monitor who delivered the votes after “eating”.

“Of all the people who eat, its only you who has betrayed us,” Mphepo said in direct reference to Kadomtoli.

“We will deal with you,” warned Mphepo.

But the councillor laughed off, saying “Muli n’chinthu odala (you have issues).”

He further said to DPP secretary general to move away from “fear mongering ” politics.

Shouted the councillor: “The politics of fear cannot go no, stop it.”

He teased Mphepo further: “Tayiphula oDala (we have won fair and square).”

In his acceptance speech, Councillor Bikoko  said he was so “ proud” that Lilongwe has chosen “hope over fear” and development  over division.

Mayor-elect Bikoko said that he was “deeply humbled” by the trust that councillors and MPs had put in him.

Bikoko said his priority will be to change face of Lilongwe City into world class city.

“As you are aware that most people have been complaining of the status of the Lilongwe City, it is my job now to ensure that this city is fully developed as a capital,” said Bikoko.

Bikoko said he will also ensure that Lilongwe is a crime free area.

“Security is Paramount all over so my job will now be to ensure that the city is a crime free zone,” said Bikoko.

Bikoko holds Masters of Business Management from Colorado Technical University and he also posses PhD.

He was the first Councillor to declare that he will not use his allowances for personal gain but to develop his ward.

At one time he donated computers at the school within his ward.

MCP director of elections Maxwell Thyolera said “It’s an extraordinary moment to have Bikoko as Mayor of Lilongwe.”

“The win represents a major boost for MCP in Lilongwe,” he added.

But DPP’s Mphepo said  winning  a mayoral post in the capital was still nowhere near good enough to win a General Election.

    1. Weddings are held in residential areas everyday. How is that possible? Where are peoples privacy gone to?

  4. Parties aside, Bikoko (Peacock?) is well educated and smart. He is a technocrat and Malawi needs this type of people to move forward. It does not matter where he comes from, as long as he is a Malawian, he belongs.
    While congratulating MCP, congratulations to the Councillors for electing a good candidate. DPP must be ashamed for bringing violence to the elections. The same violence was shown during Bingu’s time.

    Why should they cry for your vote? Its unfortunate your fellow tumbuka (mulyezi) – shame on him- gave them and associate with them.

  14. Congrats to the New Mayor. The diaspora would love to see corruption ending in Lilongwe City. Investigate all useless land grabbing deals especially the popular pinyolo of Mayor’s House. Fight back and expose sinister deals of the crooked politichans, these are people who are thieves and pose like politicians. I know you for your result orientation. Deal decisively with all crooked people at Civic Centre. Restructure that thing completely so that service delivery befit a capital city. Follow up useless roads projects that are lingering in cash gate. Arrest everybody involved. Recover all lost property and make them pay!

  15. Malawians should not tolerate the conduct that Mphepo showed. ACB and the Police should quickly come in and question both Mphepo and Councillor Kadomtoli. This is open corruption and intimidation.

    There were many witnesses around and this should be a clear case. I rest my case.

    1)Pali anthu amene amafukula mchenga mbali mwa mseu. Izi zimapangitsa kuti mseu ugumuke. Chonde muthetse mchitidwe wachabewu.
    2)Komanso ma minibus amangoima paliponse. Olo kunja passenger vehicles don’t stop to pick people anywhere. Izinso zikupangitsa kuti miseu yathu ikhale yougumuka mbali kwambiri.
    3) Chinanso ma truck asiye kupita m’ma location chifukwa miseu ya m’ma location is not meant for heavy duty vehicles. Miseu imawonongeka msanga.
    4)Komanso m’ma location anthu pomanga nyumba padzikhala drainage system kuti ma feeder roads azilimba.
    5)Chinanso ndi chakuti ngati nkotheka; from KIA to Mchinji Round About to Town Hall to six miles mseu unafunika dual carriage.Inde ndife amphawi koma tisamachite kulengeza umphawi
    6) Obviously there is need for improved waste management. Timakhala ngati anyani anthufe zochita zathu
    7) Pomaliza ndasangalala kuti Chapondera waluza. The guy was simply put, living in the past. Ine ndimadabwa kuti of all the people why that fool!?

    1. Ndinaiwala china. It’s high time Lilongwe constructed a modern bus terminal. If district councils have done it why not the face of the country?

  19. Ine ndikufuna atseke pa Kayuni, the open restaurant close to city centre post office is a health hazard. In Summer when people are enjoying their meals, whirlwind comes from nowhere and messes up the food. Kayuni must build a restaurant and what is happening now does not give a good impression of the capital city. The City Council must use its bye-laws to punish those that disobey them and the the health and Environment department of LCC must begin to work. People should not die of TB, after all Lilongwe does not have good health facilities like Blantyre.

  23. When a party departs from being a vehicle for articulating socio-economic development to becoming an arrogant and corrupt entity its taught such bitter lessons. DPP, you can dismiss this victory as useless if you want but the fact is the plot is slowly being lost.

  28. In fact many people in DPP do not like Mr Mphepo. He destroys the party rather than build it. Kodi anthu saauza a President chilungamo bwanji. Ma Advisor and NIB not helping at all. I have respect for Dr Ntaba but not for Mr Mphepo he is full of ill will towards most DPP leaders and survives on gossip. He is cheap. People in the party know this but they just keep quiet akuti poti a Mphepo anakhala ku exile with the Mutharikas. Chipani nkumaonongeka.

  30. Finally! Good riddance to bad rubbish. The last mayor couldn’t even dress himself, let alone the city. He was shabby through and through and Kwame was dumb not to step in where that old man was failing. Let them both go.

  31. I have always wondered why of all people, my party DPP chose Francis Mphepo as Acting SG. He is Chief Gossiper and Confusionists. Nothing else. He Lacks any idea of running a party. A very violent and vindictive man. Afunse mzimu wa Bingu. Mphepo only good at damaging others to consolidate his position. A very pathetic choice. APM mupaone bwino pamenepa. He is not helping the party at all.

  41. Congratulations Dr. Bikoko however, my free advice to you is to try and live outside the political box. Borrow a leaf from Noel Chalamanda, the young lawyer has made a positive impact in Blantyre City and I hope that both current Councillors and MPs in Blantyre will maintain him for the sake of continuity in development projects so far initiated. I very much doubt if DPPs Ngalande can much Chalamanda in initiating development projects. Let Noel continue and finish the projects he initiated. Besides, Noel interacts well with the society, he is humble and inclusive.

  42. Lilongwe really deteriorated. Nothing seemed to work with Chapondera.
    Hopefully within 100 days in office will see drastic changes of improvement as were those of Chalamanda in Blantyre.
