Minister Chaponda collapses at Mutharika’s rally

There was panic among Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) officials on Thursday afternoon in Mangochi, when one cabinet minister George Chaponda was rushed to Mangochi District Hospital after collapsing when President Bingu wa Mutharika was addressing the gathering during this year’s World Water Day.

According to DPP official, who was at the scene of the incidence, Chaponda collapsed from his chair when the President was addressing people.

“Many people did not notice what happened, but l can confirm to you that he fall down from his chair before some people rushed him to a government Hammer vehicle to the hospital,” said the source.

When Nyasa Times contacted Mangochi District Hospital, doctors treating the Minister said his condition was “worrying but stable.”

They refused to say what had cause his collapse, saying they could not discuss individual medical case

On another note, another Police officer was also being rushed to the same hospital after she fainted at the same ceremony.

In February, a DPP woman died in Ndirande Malabada during a political rally after collapsing while dancing.

The woman was entertaining the crowd that had come to attend a DPP rally organized by the party gurus, among them, secretary –General Wakuda Kamanga and the minister of defence Aaron Sangala.

After collapsing she was rushed to a nearby Malabada Health Centre where she was pronounced dead.
