Minister disrespects the President? Gangata’s K40million church donation puts Mutharika’s K5million to shame

Malawi’s Sports Minister Alfred Gangata appears to have broken a golden rule of politics — never outshine your boss — after handing over a jaw-dropping K40 million donation to the CCAP Livingstonia Synod, eight times more than the amount given by his own President.

The minister who upstaged his own boss: Gangata’s K40m gift eclipses Mutharika, Chakwera and Kabambe combined

The eye-watering gesture, made at the Synod’s Annual General Conference at Kamuzu Academy in Kasungu, left tongues wagging after it emerged President Arthur Peter Mutharika had donated just K5 million on the same occasion — a staggering K35 million less than his own Cabinet minister.

Gangata’s contribution instantly made him the biggest political donor at the gathering, eclipsing offerings from some of Malawi’s most senior political heavyweights.

Former President and MCP leader Dr Lazarus Chakwera gave K2.5 million, while UTM president Dr Dalitso Kabambe contributed K1 million.

The lavish donation has drawn comparisons to Robert Greene’s famous 48 Laws of Power, specifically the golden rule: “Never outshine the master.”

Critics of the unwritten code argue that ambitious subordinates who overshadow their superiors risk provoking insecurity, envy — or worse.

Whether Gangata’s blockbuster gift was a calculated show of loyalty, a generous act of faith, or an unintentional political statement remains unclear.

But one thing is certain: on a day meant to celebrate unity and generosity, it was the Sports Minister — not the President — who stole the show.
