Malawian beauty will be on exhibition in Birmingham, on England on 28 September when the new Miss Malawi UK will be crowned after two years of the pageant absence.
About 10 young Malawi women will take to the ramp at the beauty pageant with the aim of promoting Malawi tourism and culture in the diaspora, say organisers.
Organisers said there are several entertainment activities lined up to spice the beauty pageant.
They are expecting other artists to perform at the event. They include Malawian artists in UK such as Hazel Mak, comedian Dalitso Chaponda and a surprise package of an artist from Malawi.
“Miss Malawi UK used to be an annual event but since we hosted that last one in 2009 in Manchester, the event went into hibernation. We decided to revive this pageant because this is one way of showcasing Malawi culture. We have also been boosted by the new Malawian fashion designer Felicia who has pledged to dress the beauty queen in her clothing line,” a statement by organisers said.
The beauty queen will also be tasked to promote Malawi tourism.
“We are making this Miss Malawi UK to be institutionalised and the holder of the title will be engaged in promoting culture issues here in the diaspora. We also want to help in charity work, fundraising to assist UK-based charities for Malawi such as Malawi Health Care Support UK, and FOMO.
“Since we announced the return of Miss Malawu UK, there has been an overwhelming response from Malawian girls, mostly students, others doing professional work, who have applied to contest. We so far have 10 contestants from different parts of UK,” said the statement.
Meanwhile, Kondi ‘Bokoyoke’ Munthali told Nyasa Times that the advance ticket for £10 are selling fast, saying on the gate people will pay a fee of £15.
The event will take place at La Reference Bar & Restaurant, 160 Hockley Hill B18 5AN. The pageant will be held in a multi-purpose hall at the place while the after party will be held at the bar and restaurant.
