“We are looking for 15 ladies [and] those who want to join can call on 0888721333,” said Banda. “We’re calling upon women out there to register; it’s a big challenge to get contestants as big ladies are shy.”

Banda pointed out: “We are in Africa and they [big Mamas] should always remember that being big from an African perspective is beautiful.

“We want to give them confidence. Big women can also show their beauty on the ramp, they can catwalk and better than the slim ones.”

The Top 3 in the Miss Matofotofo Blantyre will go home with the traditional prizes; a goat each, plus cash prizes of K50, 000 (winning queen), K30, 000 (First Princess) and K20, 000 (Second Princess). “They will also walk away with assorted prizes” as said by Banda.

Miss True African Queen Blantyre, her First and Second Princesses as well as other two big Mamas to be chosen by the judges will represent the city at the national contest slated for April 27 at Capital Hotel in the capital Lilongwe.

Auditions for the northern region are expected to be held in March in Mzuzu where they will select the city’s Miss Matofotofo and other four big Mamas the green city at the national finale.

The current Miss Matofotofo Lilongwe queen is Constance Kachoka who took over the crown after the winner Florence Banda (not the event’s national director) was dethroned following her sex scandal story in the media last November.

The Miss True African Queen (then called Miss Matofotofo) was launched in Zimbabwe in December 2007 with a view to give confidence to the mostly diffident big women in Africa.

Miss True African Queen is a contest for women who are big and fluffy and mostly those who wear size 40 and above, with no restrictions on age, weight, height and marital status.
