Mkwambisi to sponsor students in 25 Malawi secondary schools

Dr. David Mkwambisi, a lecturer at Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Luanar) and an expert in climate change issues, is establishing the Dr. David Mkwambisi Education Initiative which will see 25 hardworking but poor students pursue their studies with eased educational support.

Giving background to the initiative, Mkwambisi  one the pioneer columnists on Nyasa Times, says: “…in 1982 January I left the corridors of Salima Secondary School due to lack of school fees. Despite knocking on the offices of several government departments, my education future was terminated.”

The humble academician, who also runs an eco-centre along the Mitundu road in his bid to promote environmental management using indigenous and modern ways, adds many Malawians have been denied their rights to education due to several factors including government policies.

“I would like to contribute to this important development sector through the Dr David Mkwambisi Education Initiative,” he commits.

Under the initiative Dr. Mkwambisi will sponsor twenty-five students (1 student from each secondary school selected by school management) from the following Secondary schools: Chitipa, Karonga, Rumphi, Nkhata-Bay, Mzimba, Dowa, Salima, Ntchisi, Kasungu, Ntcheu, Umbwi, Mitundu, Mangochi, Nsanje, Chikhwawa, Phalombe, Thyolo, Mulanje, Neno, Mwanza, Chiladzulu, Mulunguzi, Njolomole Community Day and Likoma.

“Sponsorship will target those in Form 2 and will include schools fees up to Form 4. University support shall be considered depending on other factors,” he explain.

The selection process will benefit: “Select students that are from poor families and are performing extremely well in all subjects, with exemplary behaviour.”

He said the selection process will be monitored by reporters of  private Zodiak Broadcasting Services working in the districts.

“Priority must be given to female learners. The details of the candidate, cost of fees and bank details should be send to: Dr David Mkwambisi Education Initiative, C/O Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Po Box 219, Lilongwe. Email: [email protected]. With endorsement of Zodiak Reporter. “
