MOC snubs Mpinganjira: Co-opts Chinunda into executive

The Malawi Olympic Committee (MOC) has snubbed former Secretary General Helene Mpinganjira after picking Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) president Rosy Chinunda into the executive committee to fill the quota of female member in the committee.

MOC is the mother governing body of Olympic and Commonwealth Games’ sporting disciplines.

Newly elected Secretary General Jappie Mhango said the executive board met on Sunday and settled to co-opt Chinunda in the board “in compliance with the constitutional dictates which provides that if no woman is elected into the board, the executive shall co-opt at least two women to balance gender”.

The outspoken Mhango, who ousted Mpinganjira was elusive to explain the reason for snubbing their former fellow executive committee member.

“This decision was made by the board and I don’t’ thinks it’s right and proper for me to comment on that,” he said.

Chinunda confirmed the development but said she was yet to be served with an official appointment letter.

“Of course the Secretary General called and I was shocked because I didn’t expect it,” Chinunda said.

“I know that I have considered because I am going there on NAM ticket and I will do my best not to disappoint the association.”

She joins Vice-President Flora Mwandira who defeated Basketball Association of Malawi (Basmal) Vice-Chairman Ben Mlasaanthu during the March 22 elections held in Mangochi.

The executive board was obliged to co-opt a member in line with Olympic Charter requirements which advocates for at least two female members in the committee.
