MP Kalindo leads  ‘half-naked’ protest against albino attacks in Malawi

Mulanje South member of Parliament (MP) Bon Kalindo (Democratic Progressive Party-DPP),  on Thursday staged a ‘half-naked’ protest  in the capital Lilongwe against the abductions and killings of people with albinism.

Kalindo, who is leading a movement planning to demonstrate in favour of concrete action against perpetrators of attacks on people with albinism, had initially planned the ‘naked’ march  but on Thursday did not expose his privates, opting to put on a small short, a vest with his big belly out , scarf, head gear all in red colour.

In Malawi, 19 people with albinism have been killed since 2014.

Besides the 19 people with albinism killed, Malawi has also recorded more than 65 cases of albino abductions since 2014.

Kalindo, a renowned comedian himself known as ‘Winiko’,  presenting a petition to parliament said a death sentence should be applied for albino killers.

He claimed some politicians are behind  criminals involved in a syndicate that is hunting for albino body parts in Malawi, including the use of parents and relatives to catch their prey.

Although the Constitution provides for a death penalty, all presidents in democratic Malawi have declined to sign execution orders for those on death row.

The MP said President Peter Mutharika  should  sign the execution orders for albino killers.

President Mutharika has on many occasions admitted feeling ashamed by the attacks on people with albinism but said he would not introduce death penalty specifically for albino issues as it already exists in the country’s penal code.

UN’s  envoy Ikponwosa Ero says “Addressing root causes of attacks, inparticular why they are happening, is indispensable to eradicating them.”

Meanwhile,  Kalindo has disowned an open letter purported to have been authored by him to President Peter Mutharika, Cabinet ministers and governing DPP accusing the ruling elite of enriching themselves while failing to provide security for people with albinism.

Kalindo, who is also DPP deputy spokesperson, said the document was authored by his haters.

Lesson kwa Osama ndichisilamu ngati iwe Kwethemu. Bible likutipatsa 78 chapters that discusses about death penalty and to begin with Gen 9:6 says whoever takes lifeof another should also taste it. Who are you to crash God’s say? Who told you that Boko Haram is Islam? Those are fractions of disgruntled believers who wants to satisfy their needs in the name of religion. What Kalindo has petitioned has symbolically defended so called victims of albimism and had it been you were one, could’ve felt its importance. If you don’t have any say, better keep quite bcoz your comment is total… Read more »

Useless a member of parliament handing over a petition to parliament????? Why can’t he just speak from within???? Just a publicity stunt. I understand he is a deputy spokesperson of the party in power which means he has got an access to meet the president in person why can’t he do that rather than opting for telling young desperate women to expose their bodies????? Tell me how is this going to help?????? Mine are only questions.

This is a better wake up call to those in Authority. Next time Mr Kalindo and the two strong women i see in the picture, take the cashgate issues to the streets in the same fashion….because actions from ACB and others will take us no where! Bravo indeed. Such brave protests might be the beginning of a better Malawi.

O………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………O Malawi has many cowards, . . . but if we let truth flow freely like the Malawi Kwacha; Kalindo is not one of them. Ironically, Kalindo has technically protested against APM and his (APM’s) strange I-cant-think gesture. . . . Such courage is rare and very enviable. Bravo! …………………………………………………………………………….. Its just sad that besides cowards, Malawi is also cursed with an abundant supply of hypocrites; . . . and saddest when the leadership, is one of them. Good people . . . . . . APM wants to be seen as an avid defender of the constitution – when… Read more »

so called analyst, this has nothing to do with politics of retribution as you would like to fathom it. Take APM off the picture and you and I will have the clues. Three arms of government : Executive, legislature and judiciary cannot command each other. We just need to work together to find the root of the problem and soon we will abate it. I personally like your analytical discussions but when you pop in lots of politics, you may loose one of your avid followers
