MRA adjusts freight charges for foreign goods
Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has adjusted upwards the guide values for freight charges for goods imported from different countries across the globe.
In a circular dated October 6, 2021, the public revenue collector’s Deputy Commissioner responsible for Business Support (Customs and Excise), Skiviner Mlowoka, said the increase in freight charges was with immediate effect.
Among others, Mlowoka said importers will now be required to pay US$8, 800 for a 20-feet container and US$14, 200 for the 40-feet container.
“All station managers and staff should ensure that the contents of this circular are read, understood and complied with,” he said.
The cost of living will be unbearable.
Malawi Taxes are the highest and you are increasing more. This does not make sense as economic policy. First the national income increase by government investment, private investments and exports and it reduces by imports, tax and savings. Let us see Malawi start from corporation tax is the highest if not in the whole world 35% for the foreign companies and 30% for the other companies. SA is 28%, the UK is 19%. Thats is why we are suffering from the expensive goods.
MRA is a Fright Company? Or a tax collection agency on behalf of Government. This is a separate container import excise tax in addition to the Duty Tax, Excise Tax, Carbon Tax and the VAT Taxes of the contents of the Container. No doubt this will drive up imported consumer goods, increase inflation, resulting in less consumer disposable income requiring Government to hike salaries creating further inflation.
