MSB plays hide-and-seek on promo winner

State-owned commercial bank, the Malawi Savings Bank (MSB) is playing hide-and-seek on a Mangochi customer who was supposed to have traveled to Israel under the bank’s auspices for turning a winner in a “win trip” competition in May the year.

A senior official of the bank disclosed that some managers have plotted to kill the trip for White Machemba of Mlamba village in the T/A Bwananyambi in Mangochi after the bank promised to send him to Israel.

“The winner exchanged R15 at our branch in Mangochi. He was informed of the luck and according to the agreement, MSB was expected to provide a return ticket to Jerusalem, meals for one week, accommodation and US$1000 travel expense allowance.

“The agreement has not been honoured and some of our managers have even threatened him when he spoke to Radio Maria over the issue,” one senior manager said.

The bank official said Machemba has not even received the US$1000.

“I do not want to expose the names of the officials who have decided to kill the trip but this is very bad because next time clients will not take the bank seriously. Why should we organize a competition when we know we will not be able to honour the results. This is betraying customers. It pains some of us working in this bank to see this kind of theft,” the official fumed.

MSB general manager Venancio Kapalamula was reportedly outside the country. All officials we talked to referred the matter to Kapalamula.

Another official not authorised to speak to the media however defended the bank saying it has been honouring its promotions citing the recent Phindu ad Cash Splash Promotion when  MSB gave out K50 000 (about $300) to the ultimate winner with five other winners getting K5 000 (about $30) each.
