Msowoya declares interest to be MCP running-mate: Kaliwo, Kabwila back Chakwera-Msowoya pair

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) embattled secretary general Gustave Kaliwo on Sunday joined the party’s vice president Richard Msowoya at a political rally in Mzimba just a week after wealthy businessman Sidik Mia joined the party.

MCP Vice President. Richard Msowoya : I still want to be Chakwera’s runningmate in 2019

Party ‘rebels’ including Jessie Kabwila were in attendance at the rally held at Chimkusa ground amid heightened speculation that MCP president Lazarus Chakwera would drop Msowoya as running mate in the 2019 election and opt for Mia.

Conspicously missing at the rally were national executive committee members of the party aligned to Chakwera whose decision to take Mia into the party has proved to be divisive.

Msowoya, who is also MCP first  vice president and Karonga Nyungwe member of parliament (MP) , said he was happy that Kaliwo attended his rally and is supporting him.

“Even in the church the pastor is always comfortable when he is working with the session clerk because he is the dictionary of the church,” said Msowoya who was  indirectly attacking Chakwera who has been holding rallies alone without the party SG.

Msowoya declared that he will remain Chakwera’s running mate in 2019 elections despite fevered speculation that Mia would be opted for that.

“Chakwera  is a better candidate to lead Malawi in 2019 and I also qualify to be  his deputy so support me so that I and Chakwera lead MCP into government come 2019 elections,” said Msowoya.

Declared Msowoya: “Malawi Congress Party has Dr Chakwera, a person I know can run the country well. MCP has a vice-president Richard Msowoya and you know how I work.

“So, please give us a chance, help me, so that Chakwera and I get into government and run it in a way that people will feel good about their country.”

He continued:“It is not simple for people who just meet in a house to run government because they take it like a club, and because it is a club, they just share government money. MCP does not belong to one person.”

And Kabwila said she back the ticket of Chakwera and Msowoya, saying they are “competent leaders.”

“In MCP we go to a convention and Richard Msowoya was elected during a convention. So,  for that  I stand here  and say, I do politics of constitutionalism and MCP says if you join us, well and good, but the positions you want to occupy are already filled,” said Kabwila.

“The pair of Chakwera and Msowoya was not bought from a store, it was formed at a convention. That must be respected,” he said.

Kaliwo said he will be going to court ti vacate an injunction which  Chakwera obtained  so that he can go ahead to hold a convention.

“An early convention would help us  prepare well for 2019 elections,” he said.

Another notable person who attended the rally was Kasungu West MP, Alex Major.

As Msowoya, the Speaker of parliament and Kaliwo were holding the rally in Mzimba, President Peter Mutharika seemed to be sympathising with Msowoya as he told people in Mzuzu that Mia’s recent remarks in Ngabu, Chikhwawa that he would grab any position from any weak official whom he described as lebwedelebwede.

“He (Mia) should not have used such a demeaning and insulting word to the great son of the north (Msowoya). He needs great respect, people from the north deserves respect,” said Mutharika at Katoto round about as he entered Mzuzu for official duties.

A faction from the MCP has since asked Mia to apologise over his lebwedelebwede remark.

During the Mzimba rally, Msowoya and Kaliwo also welcomed Mzuzu City Mayor William  Mkandawire into the MCP , saying he  followed right procedures of joing the party. Mkandawire was previously People’s Party (PP) member.

Let I call a spade by its name. Starting with Mr. Msowoya, it is very pathetic that you are being misled by Kabwira and Kaliwo. Talking about your popularity in the North-you are not a cloud puller, let alone in Karonga where I come from. You cannot be compared with the likes of late Kampunga; who had a mark on the district. You are not even a match to the late Tom Chihana who was revered by the North. But because of lack of trust in him, remember how Aford faired in one of the elections in the North during… Read more »

MCP has too many problems to win an election; mmanja mwache muli magazi thoo komanso it has too many nkholokolo!

Moya Mutharika wa Dazi

The problem with Msowoya is that he thinks he is entitled to the MCP vice presidency simply because he was loyal to Chakwera. This is enough now Mr Speaker sir, you need to demostrate that you will bring teh much needed votes to the party. It was very clear after the 2014 elections that your choice to the MCP running did NOT ring any results to MCP as a party. Actually, even yourself struggled heavily to win your parliamentary seat. MCP only got two parliamentary seats in the north. Otherwise, MCP can still manage to gets votes in the north… Read more »

I see Chakwera making the same mistake Joyce Banda former President made in her choice of running mate. She believed Gwengwe would influence people in the center to vote for her. A big miscalculation that cost her dearly. Mia is not the right political investment for Chakwera. Mia is not a political magnet because he lacks a stable constituency and political stamina to sway any meaningful support for MCP. I doubt Mia could even give MCP 30% of the lower Shire vote. For sure he will have no impact in other southern districts. MCP and Chakwera if they realistically aspire… Read more »

I disagree. The North is extremely unpredictable. Unless you do not stay in the Northern Region and you have never done so throughout your life. In the North people vote using their heads. They listen more to Livingstonia Synod than politicians. Consider the checkmate that Chakufwa Chihana received in 2004. It was Gwanda Chakuwamba who ammased more votes in the North. You can’t predict how they will vote in 2019. On the other hand, people in the south and to a a large extent in Central region vote regional lines of which the worst is the south. An effort must… Read more »

My dear Msowoya, you will not even win the parliamentary seat in 2019 so how do we trust that you will add value to the party. While Mia is bringing numbers to the party, you are busy instigating anarchy without value. The party lost Nyungwe Ward right under your watchful eye. Just appreciate and be thankful the party made you Speaker and you will have a decent living till you die. Whether you like it or not, Mia will partner Chakwera on the ballot and another able person from the North will be our next SG. Hambani kahle!

Msowoya is not a crowd puller and thats a fact. Bringing Kabwira and Kaliwo who are critics of Chakwera wont benefit you at all. And the analogy of the session clerk is wrong because churches as institutions too have their own rules and regulations that one needs to follow. Whenever the session clerk is wrong, she or he is relieved from his duties and sometimes excommunicated. You talk as if session clerks are angels…why? Tread carefully Hon Msowoya. You are where you are because of the MCP constituents and I bet you that if you had run on another ticket… Read more »

To win an election needs a plan, without plan you cant win. The running mate is the choice of the presidential candidate and what I can tell you mr Speaker is to work very hard to strengthen the party so that you and your party will win in 2019 election. Know this to win an election needs more people to vote for you and this time is very important to bring more members into the party. Don’t worry with the new members who are joining the party. You can protect to be a running mate but loose the election. Think… Read more »

Hon. Richard Msowoya I have so much respect for u as my party’s vice president but the way u have conducted this rally, am so much disappointed with u. Look to ur right hand side, those two are critics of ur boss. Should I conclude u are one of them? Birds of the same feathers flock together. Please the right honourable speaker do not bring more confusions or divisions in the party. U are where u are because of MCP led by Dr. Chakwera who has not told u he’s parternering with Mia or urself in 2019. Why are u… Read more »
