Mtambo defiant, says ‘change movement’ unstoppable

Fierce and prominent human rights activist Timothy Mtambo has come out of police custody on bail defiantly saying will not stop pressing President Peter Mutharika fire Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) commissioners and appoint new commission to conduct fresh elections.

Mtambo said Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) and Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (Cdedi) will press Mutharika to assent to Electoral Bills recently passed in Parliament,

He was speaking  minutes after the Lilongwe magistrate’s court granted him and Gift Trapence and MacDonald Sembereka bail after their arrest for allegedly mobilising people to shut down state residences.

” Change cannot be stopped. This movement will not be stopped by anybody. This movement is heavenly movement. We are soldiers for peace, freedom and justice. We are going to hold these values dearly,” said Mtambo.

He said the hour to change things has now come.

“We are empowered more than ever. The new begging is coming and is now,” he said.

The rights activists  said they will not be intimidated.

“The law of gravity states that what goes up must come down,” said HRDC chairperson.

His father was among hundreds of people who came to the court when the three HRDC officials were being given bail.

On February 3, the High Court sitting in Lilongwe as the Constitutional Court (ConCourt) annulled the presidential election, saying they were marred by a plethora of irregularities. The court therefore ordered Parliament to make provisions for holding of fresh presidential election within 150 days.

Parliament passed the Parliamentary and Presidential Elections Amendment Bill which has set fresh elections to be held on May 19. The Bill also provides for the holding a run-off election 30 days later if no candidate gets 50%+1 of the votes cast.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of Appeal in Lilongwe has thrown out the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) application in which it wanted the court to grant a stay order on the judgement that nullified the May 21 2019 presidential election.

@ Chataika, I feel sorry for you, you sound interesting everytime I see your comment more especially concerning the HRDC, all what is happening here is just exactly the way how changes come in the Country,on that don’t make a mistake, in many Countries, they have to pass through all what you see in this Country, Im just wondering what kind of people like you we have in this Country who can not see and or recognise the blowing of the wind where it is coming from and where it is going though you can not see it? Are you still… Read more »

Mr Chataika know this from today. The framers of the constitution were people with a voice that’s why they only allowed peaceful demonstrations. The same framers are the ones breaking the laws knowing that the voiceless can match just like DPP did they will not listen to them. Truth is rioting, burning, breaking, injuring and killing is the voice of the voiceless. They don’t destroy their lives and property. They destroy lives and property of those with voice so they too can feel the pain they feel. So stop dreaming for any meaningful change there will be looting burning breaking… Read more »

Get the facts clear, Olivier, what the supreme court has said no any other court can discredit.

The supreme court already made a ruling in 1999 about this, they never said majority means 50+1 so Ansah is only following the law

The bail conditions are clear that Mtambo was supposed to remanded but for the sake of peace the has given these gods tough bail conditions. they are asked not to disturb peace. Everyone knows that our peace is disturbed because of Chakwera and Chilima by using their HRDC and Mtambo. The will of God will always happen and not our ambitions to occupy offices.

“This movement is heavenly movement, for peace, freedom and justice.” Thus blasphemy. God is Holy. Mtambo do not be motivated by crowds to blasphemy God. Every one will be judged alone, these supporters will not be there. Just continue with your assignments without blaspheming God. Know that God is Holy. If you were from heaven why using charms around your body? Heaven does work like that. Read the bible carefully. God is holy and will always be Holy. BE CAREFUL!!!!
