Mtumodzi, DPP MP Ngwira arrested

Deputy Principal Secretary for Ministry of Disabilities and the Elderly Chikumbutso Mtumodzi has been arrested.

Mtuumodzi, Former presidential spokesman,was arrested   around 4am at his Area 10 residence in Lilongwe. He was picked by new head of CID Bob Mtekama, accusing him of keeping firearms. About 20 police officers invaded his house.

Police spokesman Davie Chingwalu confirmed Mtumodzi arrest, saying he was found in n of a bayonet and an a AK 47 toy gun.

A bayonet – which can only be found with police officers- is a long  blade adapted to fit the muzzle end of a rifle and used as a weapon in close combat.

Mtumodzi has however denied keeping guns, saying “there is no iota of truth” in the allegations.

Police were questioning Mtumodzi at Lingadzi police station in the morning.

Mtumodzi: Arrested

Meanwhile, former ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) vocal Regional Governor for the North Rev Christopher Mzomera Ngwira spent Wednesday night in the cooler after being arrested on suspicion of misappropriating development funds.

The DPP regional governor was apprehended Wednesday evening by Mzuzu Police for allegedly abusing undisclosed millions of Kwachas meant for the development of his Constituency under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

Rev Ngwira, a former junior minister for Lands, Housing and Urban Development in the previous regime of late Bingu wa Mutharika, is also a Parliamentarian for Mzimba Hora Constituency.

While confirming the arrest, Mzuzu Police Station Spokesperson Edward Longwe could not divulge more information on the matter claiming investigations were still under way.

“We are still investigating the matter so I can’t say anything at the moment,” Longwe said Thursday morning.

The DPP lawmaker stirred a controversy last month when he claimed his party was still ruling the country because President Joyce Banda owes her rise to the former ruling party.

The youthful Rev Ngwira was appointed governor of the region following the resignation of one-time DPP die hard Frank Mwenifumbo who defected to the ruling Peoples Party (PP) after the death of Mutharika.
