Mukhito’s ‘touch of class’: Dress to thrill

Lovely: Peter Mukhito and-wife being welcomed by Laston Kachikho

One can write so many adjectives on the negatives of Head of Malawi Police, Inspector General Peter Mukhito but one thing for sure, he has “a touch of class” in terms of dressing.

During a junior officer’s ball on Christmas Eve in the capital Lilongwe, Mukhito and his wife were dressed to thrill and looked elegant.

The Police Chief not in usual officer’s uniform had put on a dinner cream jacket with a red bow-tie matching with a long and well fitting dinner dress which the wife had donned.

They walked together into the Chrismass ball room elegantly as Romeo and Juliet.

That was about the light moment on a Christmass party which however does not eclipse the image of Malawi’s top cop.

Ugly

Mukhito has gained notoriety for his involvement in interrogating political professor Blessings Chinsinga which began the stand-off for academic freedom in Malawi.

His involvement and attempted cover up of the assassination of university student Robert Chasowa still puts his image in bad light.

Police’s handling of the July 20 mass demonstrations and riots has also been one of the shortfalls of the Mukhito reign at Police.

Mukhito is also discredited for Police ineptitude and inefficiency as result of poor leadership that drove the peaceful people of Mitundu to the extent of burning a police statio.

Police failure to apprehend, to this day, criminals like Misozi Chanthunya and ruling DPP machete wielding thugs that went about beating mandasi sellers on July 19 .

But to President Bingu wa Mutharika, Mukhito is a “finest Inspector General that commanded the Police Service in Malawi.”
