Ministry of Lands official faces ‘abuse of office’ charge

An architect at the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development headquarters in Lilongwe, has been charged with abuse of office.

Christopher Linderie was accused by the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) of using his office to improperly for awarding a contract to a company dubiously.

ACB senior public relations officer Egritta Ndala said the bureau arrested Linderie and dragged him to court of December 19 to be formally charged.

“On 3rd February, 2010, the Anti-Corruption Bureau received a complaint alleging that Mr. Christopher Lindeire … connived with the proprietor of Tikhalenawo Building contractors to do electrical works as well when the electrical contract was awarded to Pexy Electrical Contractors,” Ndala said.

Linderie: On bail

She said after instituting investigations on the complaint, the ACB confirmed that Lindeire awarded the contract.

Lilongwe Magistrate Court released Linderie on bail.

He was however imposed with conditions reporting at ACB offices once every fortnight on Mondays and surrenders travel documents to the court.

Hearing for the case has been set for February 23, 2012.
