National Bank of Malawi says its new multi-million kwacha worth headquarters located in Blantyre opposite the Reserve Bank of Malawi is now operational.
Annie Magola, National Bank’s corporate affairs manager said they have initially opened the Henderson Street branch within the head office at the corner of the street and Hannover Avenue.
The bank said the new head office will be officially opened by senior government officials next year.
“The service centre opens ahead of full occupation of the building in order to give our esteemed customers a glamorous festive season,” Magola said.
She said all National Bank customers from other branches can make transactions at the new facility.
Magola said the Henderson street has new systems that allow customers to be numbered after identifying the service they came for.
“To those who are not yet part of our beautiful family, this is a great window of opportunity to join us and we encourage all large cash depositors to make use of the ample facilities for large deposits,” Magola said.
According to its initial plan the bank’s new home was supposed to open in 2009 but the deadlines have been extending due to cement, fuel and forex shortages which on several occasions led to construction stoppages at the site.
The new structure adds good scenery to the city of Blantyre underlining the prominence enjoyed by the financial sector in the country.
Some critics say National Bank could have put up this new head office 10 years ago after dominating Malawi’s banking industry for over 50 years.
