Musician Annie Matumbi joins politics, to contest in Thyolo on DPP ticket

Comedic and sometimes controversial dancehall musician Annie Matumbi will vie for the Thyolo South West constituency seat in next year’s elections, reports reaching Nyasa Times have confirmed.

While the musician could neither confirm nor deny the reports in an interview with Nyasa Times on Friday, reports coming from Thyolo indicate that the musician has been meeting traditional and church leaders in the constituency to canvass support.

Annie Matumbi, whose real name is Chiyanjano Muhezuwa, was non-committal when contacted for comment.

“Of course I have been approached by people in the constituency but I cannot make a comment right now. I will make a statement on the issue next month,” he said.

But according to the reports, Matumbi intends to contest on a DPP ticket against incumbent DPP parliamentarian Allan Chiyembekeza.

Matumbi joins a long list of Malawian musicians who have expressed interest to contest for parliamentary seats in next year’s elections in the likes of Musicians Association of Malawi president Reverand Chimwemwe Mhango (Mzimba), music icon Lucius Banda (Balaka North) and musician Collins Chitimbe (Blantyre Bangwe) among others.

Musicians already serving as MP include Joseph Tembo (Chikwawa), Dr Crowd (Dowa) and Billy Kaunda (Mzimba).
