Muslim body wants Arabic lessons in schools

A Muslim body has asked the government to introduce Arabic lessons in schools in the country.
Ulama Council of Malawi official says more Malawians are going to Arab countries for work or business.
The Council’s Secretary General, Sheikh Muslim Abbas Vinjenje, also urged the government to consider the Muslim community in loan distribution, expressing concerns about loans with interest conflicting with Islamic teachings.
He suggested adopting profit-loss sharing laws used by developed countries.
However, experts have differed on a suggestion to introduce Arabic in the curriculum.
Lucky Mbewe, a social commentator described the proposal as unnecessary saying it will only exert more pressure on learners.
Mbewe called on authorities to focus on subjects that will promote the country’s development.
On the other hand, Ben Navitcha an education expert said introducing Arabic as one of the subjects will solidify the existing relationship the country has with the far east countries.
