Mutharika death date changed again
Malawian late president Bingu wa Mutharika died on April 6, 2012, according to a white cross the army carried ahead of his casket on arrival at Mzuzu Airport on Wednesday.
The change confirms the confusion on the real date Mutharika died.
Government officials Nyasa Timestalked to at the airport failed to satisfactorily explain the apparent confusion on the exact death date of Mutharika.
“I don’t know. I am also surprised to see that there is a change on the cross,” a senior cabinet minister said.
Paradoxically, the same cross in Lilongwe indicate that the 78-year-old leader, reviled by many in Malawi and the international community, died on April 7.
But according to doctors at Kamuzu central Hospital in Lilongwe, Mutharika died the same day April 5, when he was rushed there after collapsing due to cardiac arrest at the New State House.
Medical sources further said Mutharika was airlifted to South Africa Military Hospital on April 5 clinically dead because the power and energy crisis in Malawi is so severe that the Hospital failed to carry out a proper autopsy or even keep the body refrigerated.
Mutharika has been on life-threatening illness for a long time but his officials kept on keeping it a secret and his spokesman and medical doctor, Hetherwick Ntaba kept on stressing that he was in “robust health.”
They also attempted to cover his heart attack and subsequent death but they could not go on longer.
