Mutharika denies being an alcoholic or smoker

Malawi President Bingu wa Mutharika has dismissed suggestions that he is an alcoholic or smokes, claiming he is a sober man.

There have been widespread suggestions that most of the decisions the President make are done under the influence of liquor.

During the last year July 20 demonstrations some people were singing “ukamwa moya, usayende boma ukamwa mowa, oyendetsa boma, samwa mowa” [Don’t drink and rule] in apparent reference to Mutharika’s rumoured binge drinking(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VPNNkfDiqEw).

But speaking at the inauguration of annual Presidential Sports Initiative funded by the taxpayer, for which is called the Presidential Cup, Mutharika dismissed suggestions that he is an alcoholic.

Mutharika: I don't smoke

“I neither drink beer nor smoke,” said Mutharika at Kamuzu Stadium in remarks aired live on state Malawi Broadcasting Corporation radio and television.

He then appealed to Malawians, p[particularly the youth to desist from binge drinking and smoking habits in order to live longer like him. The President turns 78 on February 24.

Despite close political associate say the President is favourite of Whisky; Mutharika said he doesn’t “consume anything that may damage my body.”

He stressed that he is a sober man and that was a fact.

President Mutharika also advised the youths to desist from bad behaviour that may lead them to be exposed to HIV and AIDS.

He reminded Malawians that the deadly disease has no cure but only has life prolonging drugs, dismissing some traditional healers who claim to have found a cure for AIDS.
