Mutharika said this when he returned home Sunday afternoon from Addis Ababa Ethiopia where he was conferred  the degree.

“It is an honour to me, but as the President of Malawi obviously I would hope that Malawians should also appreciate that it is an honour to the country as a whole,” said Mutharika.

Speaking on arrival at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) in Lilongwe, Mutharika said this is an indication of their appreciation of the efforts that the government is doing to move Malawi from aid to drain and all the structures put in place.

He mentioned some structures such as water and irrigation among others.

Mutharika said the degree is in among the highest honours the institution confers on exceptional individuals with proven track records of academic excellence.

He  therefore encouraged the youth to work extra hard to attain high qualifications so as to change the face of Malawi and Africa as a whole in economically.

Mutharika also  urged Malawians to be patriotic, have integrity, work hard and strive for positive results in everything they do if the country is to transform economically.

Double jeopardy!
1. This is a personal degree, nothing to do with us Malawians! And we had to pay the chartered flight (including allowances) for you Prof to get this useless paper.
2. You tell us to be proud of this??
I hope and pray that no other useless university confers you any more degrees because that will mean more chartered planes and loss of money. Let them wait until you are out of office, so that you can charter planes using your declared millions of dollars!

As this appears to be the season for conferring honorary degrees, I should like to take this opportunity to announce that I hereby, by the authority invested in me by our children, confer upon my wife the degree of Doctor of Domestic Management, honoris causa, in recognition of her excellent performance since receiving her Certificate of Marriage (Post-Graduate) many years ago.

“It is an honour to me, but as the President of Malawi obviously I would hope that Malawians should also appreciate that it is an honour to the country as a whole,” said Mutharika. appreciate =recognize the full worth of Proud=feeling deep pleasure or satisfaction as a result of one’s own achievements, qualities, or possessions or those of someone with whom one is closely associated: I conclude the two words are not interchangeable. Therefore Nyasa Times is inciting. When I saw the heading, the first thing that came to mind was “Akuluwa ndachitsilu kani” but when I read the story,… Read more »

Why should we be proud of honorary degrees that are conferred on everyone who occupies state house including their spouses. It appears occupying state house is the prerequisite for honorary degrees nowadays. One honorary degree is remaining though. That on eradicating hunger by advising Malawians to eat zitete or zicheche and mbewa.

Soo… Malawians should be proud, grateful that their president hires an expensive jet from their taxes to travel north, collect a worthless piece of paper…?! Will this feed the people? Put medicines in clinics? Pay teachers, policemen and others still waiting for wages? Develop irrigation? Sort corruption? This president lives in a world of his own.

I for one am not proud but ashamed. A whole professor travelling thousands of kilometres just to receive a useless piece of paper. Sometimes I wonder if our president is really a professor. Muluzi seemed to be more of a scholar than Mutharika if you compare the 2. Professorship is the highest position one can attain in scholary circles so why should someone rush to receive and honorary doctorate when he is already a professor. It does not make sense to me.

I would really hate to know how much this piece of paper has costed the Malawian tax payer and who paid for the degree. Universities charge for honorary degrees….some one behind the scenes is paying for this for favors from APM and he cannot see it. Very sorry situation we are in with a president such as this that refuses to develop the country, only his own self worth. Look at all the people that have to go to the airport to “welcome” him back, what a waste of resource, fuel, time, money. It makes me sick, really it does
