Mutharika to be buried April 23 at Ndata

Malawi’s late president Bingu Mutharika will be buried on April 23, a member of a special state funeral team has disclosed.

Mutharika’s body is expected to be flown back home from South Africa on Thursday April 12.

According to Minister of Local Government, Henry Mussa, who chairs a cabinet committee on the state funeral, the date is “tentative” as the committee is yet to agree on burial site’

He said Mutharika family wants him buried where his late wife rests at his sprawling Ndata farm in the southern Thyolo district.

“As government we were of the opinion that he be buried at the heroes’ acre right here in Lilongwe, that’s what has delayed us,” he added.

Mutharika’s first wife Ethel, who died three years ago, is also buried at the farm

Meanwhile, Mapeto DWS is currently printing cloth for the funeral of the late president.

The country is observing a 10 days mourning period in respect of the departed leader

Mutharika died on April 5 due to a cardiac arrest.

Madam Joyce Banda on Saturday assumed office as Malawi’s Head of State.
