Mutharika’s aide Ben Phiri carjacked in Malawi capital
Ben Phiri, a personal assistant to opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) president Peter Mutharika, was carjacked by armed thugs on Thursday who got away with the Mercedes Benz vehicle he was driving in Malawi’s capital Lilongwe.
Police have confirmed that Phiri reported the incident and they are investigating the matter.
Mutharika’s aide said he pleaded with the robbers to spare his life as they debated whether to kill him or not
He said the armed men threw him into a river but he was fortunate not to hit any hard surface.
Phiri was driving home from a gym in Area 18 when the incident happened.
“He met four people pushing a woman [who appeared to be] in labour on a bicycle along the Presidential Drive. He stopped to offer them a lift to Kamuzu Central Hospital but later realised the men weren’t even in need of any help at all,” his relation, Martin Nkasala is quoted saying.
“Even the one who had looked like a pregnant woman to him was a man. They [had] a gun and ordered him to take the road towards…Kamuzu Institute. When he wanted to turn a…police sub-station they threatened to kill him,” Nkasala said.
