Mwalwanda mad with Mwenifumbo for ‘base interference’

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) parliamentary hopeful for Karonga Central Constituency, Cornelius Mwalwanda, has lashed at incumbent legislator Frank Mwenifumbo for “interfering in his base,” and has since asked the latter to back off.

Mwalwanda was referring to Mwenifumbo’s presence at Mlare Health Centre [Mwalwanda’s stronghold] where he accompanied the District Commissioner’s (DC) office in re-opening of the clinic that had been closed for about a year.

The health centre had been closed by district health officials for poor sanitation after a resolution from the DC’s office.

But despite Mwenifumbo being present parliamentarian and therefore responsible for the area, Mwalwanda argued that it was wrong for the former to be found in the area because it was his “base and stronghold.”

He accused Mwenifumbo of trying to “win the hearts of my would-be voters.”

But Mwenifumbo, said he was unmoved about the tantrums.

“I am bonafide Member of Parliament (MP) for this constituency; and, therefore I am responsible for all the people I represent including the people of Mlare,” said Mwenifumbo.

Nyasa Times learnt that the health centre is now temporary operational to cater for the surrounding communities.

Isaac Mkandawire, who represented the office of the DC during the last meeting summoned by the community over the health centre, confirmed that the facility is temporarily opened.

“During the meeting, the community leaders agreed to offer Mlare Craft center building as a temporary shelter where patients will be receiving drugs as they are waiting for a main building which still needs renovation,” Mkandawire said in a telephone interview.

He added: “The project requires over K8 million and right now we are to sit down with our Councillors to bang our heads together to see where we can get that money from. We are aware that the community has already done its 25 percent contributions of building materials and we will expedite the process.”

But Mwenifumbo has wondered why his opponent always follows his footsteps.

“Why doesn’t he attack the DC or the DHO? He now knows that people in the area are in love with me because of my performance. He must find other means of campaigning,” said Mwenifumbo.

Mlare Health Centre reaches out to over 18 500 people, according to health officials.
