Mwamaso beats Tanzanian as boxing fans lament cheating by promoters

Mzuzu based Felix Mwamaso managed to beat Tanzanian Six Bruno in an eight round non title international boxing bout on Sunday afternoon at Obriegado Leissure Park in Mzuzu.

A minute silence was observed in honour of former boxer and promoter Nginjale Young Tough Ben Chitenje who passed on last month before national anthems for Malawi and Tanzania were played.

Mwamaso was weighing 74 Kilogrammes while the visitor was at 73 Kilogrammes.

As usual, the two boxers took to just size each other up in the first round but Mwamaso’s kidney punches were outstanding in the second round.

After 30 seconds into the third round, a powerful left hook by Mwamaso sent the visitor staggering before falling onto the canvas.

Mwamaso was on top of things in rounds four to seven with excellent combinations of upper cuts and powerful jabs which were perfectly landing on Bruno’s body. Bruno was reducing excitement of the match by holding too much.

A minute into the eighth and last round, referee Dunstan Nyamazi had to briefly stop the fight to allow Bruno treated as he had sustained a cut on the side of his right eye following another powerful punch by Mwamaso. When the bout resumed, more and more punches landed onto Bruno’s body until the final ring bell rescued him.

Judge number one Stanley Banda scored 79 for Red Corner (Mwamaso) and 74 for Blue Corner (Bruno). Judge number two Lameck Phiri scored 80 points for Red Corner and 73 for Blue Corner while Judge number three Frank Pongolani scored 78 for Red Corner and 74 for Blue Corner.

With these points, Felix Mwamaso emerged the winner.

Speaking after the bout, Mwamaso said he failed knock Bruno out because he was holding too much.

The losing Tanzanian Six Bruno, speaking in Swahili through an interpreter, said he did not have enough time to prepare because the match was not his and he was told last minute to come and fight in place of Leus Mwakasope.

But former boxer Schubert Nyondo said he was very disappointed with the promoters who keep on cheating boxing fans on boxers coming from Tanzania.

“This is the third time they have done this. They give us the name of prominent boxer coming from Tanzania but when the day comes, we see a totally cheap boxer. Today we paid our money to watch Leus Mwakasope who is a very good boxer and could have been a perfect match for Mwamaso only to be told he was involved in an accident and instead they have brought Bruno. This is a lie. They knew Mwakasope was not coming. Promoters should improve on this,” lamented Nyondo.

Bagdad Mwamlima of Bagdad Boxing Promotions refused to talk to Nyasa Times on the matter.
