The office of Inspector General of Police will have a new presidential appointee in Dr George Kainja as new President Lazarus Chakwera has withdrawn the appointment of Acting Inspector General of Police Duncan Mwapasa from confirmation to Parliament.

Kainja: To head police

Mwapasa, who was Deputy Inspector General of Police responsible for operations, was appointed by former president Peter Mutharika in August 2019 as acting IG and has been in that position since waiting for confirmation from parliament.

He  once worked as guard commander for the late Bingu wa Mutharika, before he was deployed to Rumphi Police Station as officer in-charge during president Joyce Banda’s time.

Mwapasa suffers from a Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) cadet tag.

However.  Kainja who has been Commissioner of  Police Southern Region and has been serving as Director of Research,  Planning and Police Reforms.

Kainja, who was recently appointed to be Malawi’s deputy Ambassador to Zimbabwe, obtained an injunction against former president Mutharika’s decision to send him to the diplomatic mission.

According to the injunction, which was granted by Justice Charles Mkandawire, through his lawyer Gift Nankhuni, government was restrained from effecting the appointment.

Kainja was supposed to report for work at the Malawi mission in Zimbabwe on June 11.

But now he is President Chakwera’s preferred choice to head the Malawi Police Service and improve its battered image.

Kainja has been in Police service for close to 30 years and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Chancellor College and a Doctorate of Philosophy.

  1. Congratulations Dr. Kainja as the new IG. Your job is not to replace people but to reconstruct the Malawi Police Service by instilling professionalism in all your officers. The service recruitment is questionable, promotions are biased, transfers are something…so many criminals within the system. Wishing you all the best..its nothing about chewa or who but someone we can trust to head the once trusted service.

Let is our sincere hope that you will help to change the bad face that the MPS is wearing. We (the Communities) would like to ask your office Bwana IG to make some moves (postings) at your Kanengo Police Station. The way police officers treat and talk to us is terrible. Most of the officers are rude and have got bad practices. We need new faces. Please Bwana IG do something. Help Dr. Chakwera and Chilima to build Malawi Okomera Aliyense. I rest my case.
