Mwenifumbo gagged as PP unveils Mwalwanda in Karonga central

Newly appointed ruling Peoples Party (PP) Chairperson for the northern region  Christopher Ngwira has triumphed in one of his major assignment to quell the violence that has been bedevilling the infamous ‘Benghazi” Karonga Central constituency unveiling the party’s candidate Cornelious Mwalwanda and  disciplining his rival Frank Mwenefumbo.

PP changed its mind about conducting a re-run in the constituency following a Chief’s Council resolution that violence was anti-development and a disservice to the constituency.

Mwalwanda and Mwenifumbo competed in primary elections where Mwalwanda emerged victorious.

Mwenifumbo who had initially conceded defeated later backtracked and demanded a re-run.

In marathon whistle stop rallies held on Tuesday at four venues in the constituency, Ngwira told party members and the constituents that Mwalwanda is the party’s candidate in the 2014 polls.

Ngwira confirmed the development to Nyasa Times in an interview saying all the meetings went on well despite minor skirmishes at Mwenilondo.

He said although there were complaints on how the primary elections were conducted on December 22, 2013 but they were insignificant to warrant a re-run.

Both Mwalwanda and Mwenifumbo attend all the rallies which Ngwira conducted at Mlare, Chisowolo, Lupembe and Mwenilondo.

At Mlare where both were allowed to speak but Ngwira forced Mwenifumbo to “shut up” when he started going off track calling his supporters to complain on how unfair the polls were.

This made Ngwira to deny both of them the chance to speak at Chisowolo, Mlare and Mwenilondo.

However, at Mwenilondo,  Mwenifumbo forced himself on the stage and paraded some women from Gumi whom he claimed were suffering because of supporting him.

His utterances created some tensions among his supporters since he comes from Mwenilondo and chants that Mwalwanda stole the votes could be heard sporadically in crowd.

After his tirade, Mwenifumbo left the podium when Ngwira stood to address the gathering. He was seen wondering around the classrooms of Mwenilondo Primary School.

Mwenefumbo is said to be close to President Joyce Banda and her family hence behaving larger than life, noted  a top PP northern region official.
