Mzuzu University Students Representative Council (MUSREC) has ushered in new office bearers with Abel Phompho elected president of the student body.
Phompho – fondly known as ‘Divine Gentleman’ -was voted with 846 against rival Nyozomo Gondwe who polled 614 votes.
He takes over from Moses Chalera.
Phompho has pledged to work with all stakeholders to find solutions that can solve the financial crisis which Mzuzu University is facing.
He has asked President Mrs Joyce Banda, the new Chancellor of Mzuni to help bail out the institution after she publicly admitted that the university if inadequately funded.
Phompho said President Banda should found “lasting solutions” to the crisis at the university other that making “political rhetoric.”
He however pointed out that student demonstrations would not be a solution; saying engaging with stakeholders would be the best route to take.
He also called on accountability and checks on the way resources are being used at the institution to curb abuses.
