Mzuzu tax payers protest against MRA compliance team
Revenue collectors, the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) on Friday evacuated staff from its offices in Mzuzu as armed police battled with protesters who want tax compliance officers from Blantyre and Lilongwe leave the city.
The MRA officers are in Mzuzu to enforce tax compliance, a move which has irked some business people who organised over two dozen motorcycles which carried branches of trees and blocked the entrance to the MRA offices.
As the situation was getting volatile and out of hand, the police were called in to disperse the violent protests and the MRA offices were sealed and staff evacuated.
Mzuzu city council officials said the protests were illegal while MRA regional top official Dorothy Msefula refused to comment.
