Nandolo brings down Blantyre city

Blantyre City Assembly CEO Ted Nandolo has become under heavy attack from residents of the city and the authorities for bringing down Malawi’s commercial capital.

Nyasa Times has learnt that following his appointment by President Bingu wa Mutharika in January this year, 10 months down the line, Nandolo has done nothing tangible at the helm of the city worth pointing at.

Services, facilities and amenities in the city are reported to be going under in the face of the man who claims to be a performer.

Unlike his Lilongwe counterpart Kelvin Mmangisa, who has completely changed the face of the capital, Nandolo is said to be a lip service man and not an action oriented.

Nandolo: Under performance

Senior members of staff interviewed by Nyasa Times at the Blantyre Civic Centre headquarters of the city speak of a total collapse in services the city offers to residents.

Even the authorities at the Ministry of Local Government headquarters in Lilongwe and Office of President and Cabinet at Capitol Hill have already started talking of the ineffectiveness in Nandolo.

Among many other things, Blantyre is engulfed in darkness at night because City Assembly is failing maintain the streets lights, vendors are back on the streets selling their merchandise in broad day light.

And the Chinese running shops in very unhygienic conditions have taken charge of the city and rubbish collection in townships is forgotten story.

Members of staff at the city say that Nandolo’s administration skills leaves a lot to be desired and that if not checked, the city will be stinking big and services collapsing to zero in no distant future.

Staff speak of Nandolo’s hunger to fly in and out the country at the expense of city despite government reducing foreign travel in this financial year.

To make matters worse, Nandolo doubles as Board Chairperson for Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra), another big organization and his loyalty is divided between the City Assembly and Macra where he is also reported to be global trotting.

Nandolo, a Lhomwe by tribe, was sacked as Executive Director for the Council of Non Governmental Organisations (Congoma) last year for underperforming.

He, however, managed to persuade Mutharika to ascend to the top position of Chief Executive Officer for Blantyre City Assembly.
