Nankhumwa in double celebration: Continues to praise DPP leadership and supporters

Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development Minister, Kondwani Nankhumwa, on Wednesday, July 03, 2019, celebrated his 41st birthday anniversary. But what is special about the birthday anniversary is that it coincides with his 1st anniversary as Vice President of the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

“It is not just another birthday anniversary celebration; today is a special day as I am not only celebrating my 41st birthday anniversary but it also marks exactly one year since I was elected as Vice President of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) for South.

“I wish to thank God for giving me another year of life. I am blessed to be here today and I shall always revere the good Lord for all the wonderful joys I have experienced on this life journey. I pray that the Good Lord gives me the strength and wisdom to forge ahead in life and fulfill the destiny that He has gracefully placed in front of me,” said Nankhumwa in a brief interview in Lilongwe on Wednesday.

Nankhumwa said he wished to thank all members of the DPP at all levels, particularly, in the Southern Region, for their support that earned him the position of VP in the party’s Southern Region stronghold.

On July 3, 2018, Nankhumwa was elected DPP VP (South). He trounced former Information Minister Henry Mussa and incumbent Finance Minister, Joseph Mwanamveka, both hitherto considered as heavyweights in the ruling party. Nankhumwa had polled 774 votes against Mwanamveka’s 407 and Mussa’s 401 votes. He had described the victory then as a “birthday gift as I turn 40 today”.

Looking back at the past year, Nankhumwa said there have been ups and downs, “naturally” but overall the ride had been smooth owing to the cooperation and support he received from the leadership and members of the party.

“All DPP supporters and leaders are incredible individuals who have put their hearts and souls into the success of the party. This is clearly exemplified by how we came together, cooperated and supported one another during the recent tripartite polls where Malawians gave us the mandate for another five years.

“Today, I want to thank every individual and supporter of the party for everything they have done during the past 12 months that I have been VP (South), which has made a huge difference,” he said, adding that so many things have happened in between to help enhance his bigger picture and complete his comprehensive profile of growth—challenges and lessons.

The Minister  has also been re-appointed Leader of Government Business in Parliament by President Peter Mutharika.

Nankhumwa’s star has risen exponentially over the period, making him one of the politicians to watch in the DPP for the next foreseeable future. As DPP’s Southern Region Vice President, Nankhumwa has proved to be a workhorse who has made things happens for the party in the region; he is popularly perceived as a grassroots man and symbol of party cohesion within the region, which is the bedrock of the party’s support.

He was recently re-elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Mulanje Central for the next five (5) for the third consecutive time.

Nankhumwa concluded: “All this would not have been possible if it were not for the able stewardship of His Excellency President Mutharika. He is the one who has given me guidance and showed me the political ropes through and through. President Mutharika has showed faith and trust in my abilities even when I appeared like I could not go on”.

it sounds admirable but no matter how one soars high in African politics I will never admire it. If it was in business or professional areas of life supported by solid academic credentials I would be clapping hands. KN has handled himself so well but politics has a tendency of smearing one with faeces and you stink. I was born in a family of politicians and I know by experience what this means. DPP is going down the drain after this term. What will you do? Who can trust you after leading Malawians in ten painful years? Being involved with… Read more »
