NDP Running Mate Dr. Chikondi Mpokosa Wins Prestigious Ubuntu Social Enterprise Excellence Award in UK

Dr. Chikondi Lisimba Mpokosa, the Deputy President of the National Development Party (NDP) and running mate to Right Honourable Frank Tumpale Mwenifumbo, has received international recognition after being awarded the prestigious Ubuntu Social Enterprise Excellence Award at the AfBC African Business Awards 2026 in the United Kingdom.

The award places Dr. Mpokosa among a select group of African leaders whose work is transforming lives, strengthening communities, and advancing social and economic development across the continent and beyond.

The honour celebrates exceptional African changemakers whose leadership reflects the spirit of Ubuntu — a philosophy centred on humanity, compassion, shared responsibility, and collective progress.

For Dr. Mpokosa, the award is recognition of more than two decades of tireless service dedicated to empowering women and girls, advancing education, promoting social justice, and creating opportunities for vulnerable and marginalized communities.

Receiving the award before an international audience, Dr. Mpokosa dedicated the accolade to the women and girls of Malawi and Africa whose determination continues to overcome immense social and economic challenges.

“This award is not just about me. It belongs to every hardworking Malawian woman and girl who continues to rise above poverty, inequality, discrimination and hardship to pursue education, leadership, dignity and opportunity. Their resilience inspires me every day,” she said.

She described the recognition as a powerful reminder that African women have the capacity to drive transformational change when given the necessary opportunities and support.

“As a woman from Malawi, I carry the hopes of many girls who dream of becoming leaders, educators, entrepreneurs and change-makers. This award is proof that our stories matter, our voices matter and our leadership matters,” she said.

Dr. Mpokosa’s journey has been defined by a relentless commitment to development and human empowerment. With more than 26 years of experience in international development, she has served in senior leadership positions with some of the world’s most respected organisations, including UNICEF, Oxfam, VSO, Leonard Cheshire Disability International, Opportunity International and the Malala Fund.

She is also the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Youth Action for Sustainable Development (YA4SD) and Lion Olive Green Company Limited, institutions that continue to champion youth empowerment, entrepreneurship, education and sustainable development.

Throughout her distinguished career, Dr. Mpokosa has led initiatives focused on girls’ education, disability inclusion, gender equality, humanitarian response, leadership development and economic empowerment in several countries across Africa and Asia.

Her work has touched the lives of thousands of people, particularly women, young people, children affected by conflict, and communities often excluded from mainstream development opportunities.

In her acceptance remarks, Dr. Mpokosa paid tribute to the communities, development partners, mentors and young people who have worked alongside her throughout her journey.

“This recognition strengthens my commitment to continue advocating for women, girls, education and inclusive development. We must continue creating opportunities where no girl is left behind and no woman is denied the chance to achieve her full potential,” she said.

The international recognition comes at a time when Dr. Mpokosa continues to play a prominent role in Malawi’s political and development landscape, combining public service, social entrepreneurship and advocacy to champion inclusive growth and sustainable development.

Her latest achievement not only elevates her personal profile on the global stage but also shines a spotlight on Malawi’s contribution to transformational leadership, social innovation and community development.

The Ubuntu Social Enterprise Excellence Award is one of Africa’s most respected honours for social impact leadership, recognising individuals whose work continues to create lasting change and inspire future generations.
