Ngwira says JB is like biblical Deborah, detractors to perish
People’s Party (PP) provincial chairperson for the North, Reverend Christopher Mzomera Ngwira, has cursed critics of President Joyce Banda that they will perish if they continue attacking and criticising her.
He did not elaborate but repeatedly said Banda challengers will perish.
Mzomera Ngwira made the remarks at a rally held in Mzimba on Thursday which President Banda and vice president Khumbo Kachali attended.
He likened Banda to the biblical Deborah who ruled Israel as a way of punishing the nation because of its wickedness.
“It’s God who put you there that is why in Malawi we have peace and people are enjoying various freedoms,” said Ngwira, who invoked the scriptures with the book of Judges Chapter 4 verse1 to substantiate his claims.
Ngwira publicly singled out the media for unfair coverage of Banda’s achievements, saying journalists have forgotten the freedom of expression they are enjoying now was curtailed during the previous DPP regime where a newspaper ban law was proposed.
“Do want us to return to the late Professor Bingu wa Mutharika twilight period? The Nation Newspaper has forgotten how they suffered under DPP [when Frank Mwefumbo ordered civil servants not to read the paper and government placed advertisement ban],” he said.
Ngwira then said the Professors are not meant to be Presidents but advisors owing to the academic credentials.
One of the presidential hopefuls is Professor Peter Mutharika of DPP.
He claimed a country is ruled by God appointed people who are not Professors.
“The late Mutharika performed well during his first five year term but changed when some ubiquitous University awarded him the Professorship. As PP we invite professors to join us and advise our president. That’s their job,” said Ngwira.
Ngwira said people in the Northern Region are not angry with President Banda’s decision to sideline Vice-President Khumbo Kachali on the position of running mate, saying the northerners will vote PP.
