No airport clearing, no staff at land borders starting this Thursday as Immigration staff vows to proceed with their strike
A group of concerned Immigration Department staff has vowed to proceed with their planned strike tomorrow.
In a communication seen by Nyasatimes, the disgruntled Immigration workers are informing three airlines namely: Malawi Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines and Kenya Airways of the impending boycott.
The letter dated June 5 2024 has also been addressed to Malawi Revenue Authority, Transporters Association of Malawi and all travel agents, indicating that Immigration Department staff will down tools on Thursday should the Ministry of Homeland Security fail to address their concerns by close of business today.
Reads the notice: “You are therefore advised that there shall be no Immigration services in all formations including, and importantly so, all airports. Take note that we shall note hesitate to announce resumption of services once our concerns are addressed.”
The group of concerned officers is demanding the removal of their director general Charles Kalumo.
The group’s spokesperson Charles Chisi in an interview this evening confirmed that they are going ahead with the strike, saying there has not been any feedback from government.

Government should not relent. Bowing to the wishes of a group that is not even representative of the nation and are in themselves just a microcosm with unknown agenda would be a weakness.Their motives smack of politics. Why are they not WILLING to dialogue constructively until all issues are resolved ?
While defence officers mostly are disciplined ; civilians as noted most times , in harmony with laissez – faire conduct mostly. This can as well be a conflict premised on leadership styles where orders crash against the recently adopted life/work balance or flexibility approaches to the work environment.
For this reason , could responsible authorities broker the conflict deal.Highly polarised political interests are often part of such tensions as well and cannot be ruled out.
