North journalists plant trees in Mzimba

Journalists belonging to Nyika Media Club (NMC) in the northern region of Malawi on Friday took time to plant trees at Thandazga Primary School in Mzimba.

Over one thousand tree seedlings were planted, thanks to support from Raiply Malawi and Ripple Africa.

General Secretary for Nyika Media Club, Elton Mkhango, said the gesture was about showing people out there that planting trees during the tree planting season is a responsibility of everyone regardless of their profession.

“As journalists, we are concerned with what is happening to the environment around us. Problems that come as a result of environmental degradation affect everyone including journalists and it is the duty of everybody to plant trees during this season. We intend to reach out to more areas to plant more trees,” explained Mhango.

Headteacher for Thandazga Primary School, Nervous Chirwa, told Nyasa Times the trees will help to conserve soil.

“When these trees grow, they will provide the necessary shade here; they will help in water conservation as well as soil conservation. We will try our best to take care of these trees,” said Chirwa.

Nyika Media Club is a grouping of professional journalists from different media houses from all districts in the northern region of Malawi.
