Nsanje vendors block market construction: ‘Give us compensation first’
Construction of Nsanje market has halted as vendors say they want compensation first for their permanent structures which will be demolished.
Nsanje Businessmen Association vice chairman Misheck Sumana said the vendors will not give in.
“We will not give in, we will not give up, we want our compensation first before our structures are demolished in the market,” said Sumana.
He said the government has the history of not paying compensation once a project kicks off.
The government wants to construct a modern market and bus depot at the boma and officials from Wisdom construction company say the project was supposed to start early this year but the compensatiion issue is delaying the start of the construction.
Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development spokesperson Muhlabase Mughogho said the vendors and market traders should know that the market is theirs and does not belong to Capital Hill.
She therefore asked them to let the contractor start the work.
