Nthanda Congress disbands to join Malawi Congress Party
Malawi Congress Party (MCP) seems to have attracted attention of many Malawians following the election of Dr Lazarus Chakwera as the party presidential candidate in the next year’s polls, Nthanda Congress Party (NCP) has disbanded and its entire executive has joined MCP.
Initially, NCP believed to be a breakaway faction of MCP set aside August or early September to hold convention to elect its torch bearer for the next year’s tripartite elections.
But now NCP has decided to join the ranks of MCP.
“We have taken a big decision regarding the future of our party and we reached an agreement that we should support the new leadership of MCP as we are going towards the elections. He (Chakwera) is the right man for the party as well as the country if we are to move out of poverty,” said the NCP vice president Loudon Malingamoyo.
MCP Secretary General Chris Daza and NCP interim Secretary General Stanely Khaila confirmed the development.
Recent reports in the media indicate that Malawi’s Jazz icon Wambali Mkandawire has also joined MCP becoming the second high profile person after Stanely Mnenula, former Petra running mate to Kamuzu Chibambo during the 2009 elections.
MCP elected Chakwera replacing veteran politician John Tembo at the party convention last weekend at Natural Resources College in Lilongwe.
