Nyamilandu waters down fourth term calls for Malawi FA presidency
Football Association of Malawi (FAM) President Walter Nyamilandu has lived up to his word not to stand for a fourth term of office when the association holds elctions in December.
Three affiliates National Football Coaches Committee (NFCC), National Youth Football Committee (NYFC) and Central Region Football Association have started dangling the carrot for the former Mighty Be Forward Wanders and Flames international defender on the fourth term.
“I am honoured and humbled their appeal for me to stand re-election but for now nothing has changed from my earlier position,” Nyamilandu said.
NYFC Chairperson Mabvuto Missi said his committee endorsed Nyamilandu because there is no capable person who have shown interest to run.
“There’s only one person who has expressed interest [Owen Chomanika] but even he has not come forward to sell his plans. We look at this lack of interest and we are getting worried because we do not want people coming at the 11th hour because such people often do not have sound ideas,” Missi said.
He said the incumbent FAM boss has initiated a number of projects under his tutelage citing youth football development.
NFCC General Secretary Benjamin Kumwenda said two weeks ago that the coaches agreed to persuade Nyamilandu to reconsider his decision to stand.
“We met as coaches and they delegated me to ask the president to seriously reconsider his decision based on what he has done for coaches in general,” Kumwenda said.
“Under his administration FAM has initiated advanced training courses and we now have A and B licensed coaches. It is for this reason that we want him to continue because we now have a proper structure.”
Nyamilandu announced his intention to step down at the end of his third term last year during an extraordinary meeting for executive committee.
The development has put to rest speculation that Nyamilandu was itching to swallow his pride and stand as it was the case during his third term bid.
During Super League elections some delegates claimed that the FAM boss was supporting candidates to pave the way for his re-election.

Walter has done well in maintaining the sinking ship. Walter should have been gone after AFCON 2010 but I have observed how he plays his soccer political cards right. Walter is not the answer to national soccer development unless if we all love to be soccer fanatics. Let us be serious and move on and wish Mr Nyamilandu well in his next soccer venture. Its time we get a bold and revolutionary leadership that will table a group of soccer loving gurus to trnsform Mw soccer into a 21 st century global sport. Malawi needs to upgrade and transform totally… Read more »

Do you know what it means to live up to one’s word? Your leading sentence is quite misleading.

What will happen if no person will show interest? Honestly speaking people are afraid of his achievements because the one to come in must beat the record of Walter and I mean our own only Walter which I feel its a big mountain to climb.
